Grammy award Winning bassist Mark Egan has teamed up with an all-star rhythm section with Shawn Pelton- Drums and Shane Theriot-Guitar. Mark Egan on the songs from Cross Currents

1. Ponchatrain — The opening track is named for Lake Ponchatrain, a huge estuary outside of New Orleans. Shane Theriot, who wrote this song, is from Thibodaux, Louisiana, about an hour west of New Orleans. And Shawn Pelton gives it that New Orleans second line groove. It’s a strong composition and fun groove to play. It’s also a great vehicle for Shane to solo over. I was able to use my fretless sound on the bridge melodies and play an extended solo on the end vamp. The spirit of this song is an invitation to the party and we thought that it was a perfect vibe for opening the album.

2. Gulf Stream — This was inspired by listening to some of Shane’s records. I wanted to write a R&B, rootsy type of feel and orchestrate it with Shane playing slide guitar for the bridge sections and Shawn playing an inspired and driving drum feel throughout with a solo over the end vamp. The basic bass track groove was played on fretless bass as well as the live solo. Additional fretless melodies were added along with overdubbed acoustic and electric guitars.

3. Cross Currents — This song started out as a latin funk style bass line. I extended the line into a chord progression to create a form and then wrote the melody over the chord sequence. Shane plays some funky rhythm guitar parts while I play the groove on fretted bass for the basic track then I overdubbed the first A melody on fretted bass and Shane overdubbed the second A melody. The middle section goes into a spacious halftime feel that features my fretless melodic solo. We went back to a double time feel for the guitar solo and then I play a bass solo in the high register of the five-string fretted bass in order to leave sonic space between the lower groove and upper solo parts. For the solo I wanted to stay away from the low end groove so things didn’t get too muddy. The rhythmic figure that Shane and I play at the end gives room for a short drum feature for Shawn.

4. Big Sky — This is an atmospheric ballad that Shane and I wrote together. He first sent me an acoustic guitar demo with chords and a basic groove and I wrote the melodies over it. Shane had a loop he was playing to and we opened it up to a half time modal section with an acoustic guitar solo. Shane is using his volume pedal to get ambient washes in the background and I’m playing the melody on fretless bass over it. In the mix we used stereo auto-panning on Shane’s guitar textures, which you can hear with headphones, to create a three-dimensional feel. Shawn is playing with his brush sticks on the drum kit (Vater Bamboo Splash sticks for a solid feel without excess volume) for a softer effect.

5. Pocket Call —This was inspired by my love of the music of New Orleans and I thought it was in the spirit of the record concept. I thought that it would be a great feature for our New Orleans native, Shane Theriot. It started out as C minor bass groove over a drum loop then extended into a chord progression with a melody. Shawn created a hypnotic drum groove that locked with the bass line and we arranged a bass and guitar melody that leads to a guitar solo. The ending vamp has a really fun call and response unison line between bass and acoustic guitar while Shane plays a very funky electric guitar solo, playing off of Shawn’s fills.

6. Homebrew — Shane composed this song. I really liked the groove and melody and it fit in nicely with the rootsy/R&B feel and concept of the project. It also reminded me of a Maceo Parker record, “All the Kings Men”, from the early 1960’s, which is the James Brown rhythm section branching out with their own very funky record. Shawn plays a driving funky groove while Shane and I lay down rhythm tracks as well as share solos. We utilized fretless bass for the bridge melodies.

7. Sunflower — This is another of Shane’s songs. It’s a beautiful ballad that opens with a fretless melody into Shane’s guitar melodies. The bridges feature a doubled fretless melody and the second bridge builds and modulates from minor to major to feature a bass solo followed by a guitar solo feature. Shawn has a solid rolling groove throughout and his attention to dynamics and section changes is brilliant. After the final melody is a bass solo that is an extension of the intro bass melody.

8. Roll With It — This is a song that I wrote for the trio. It started as a through composed bass groove/solo that I created over a long drum loop. I was able to arrange it to create a form for the trio to play over. It’s arranged to have two open sections where Shane plays melodic solos on a Heritage H535 guitar. During the groove sections Shane accompanies the groove bass solo more as a lead player with hints of ‘Jack Johnson’, John McLaughlin stylings on his Fender Stratocaster. We used the prerecorded arrangement with my original bass line in the studio and Shawn and Shane recorded along with it. We opened it up to feature Shane at the end vamp with a melodic warm guitar tone. He overdubbed ambient guitar pads underneath to create more atmospheric space and texture and used stereo auto panning in the mix process.

9. Nonc Rodell — A song by Shawn Pelton and a tribute to his uncle Rodell. Apparently, ‘nonc’ means ‘uncle’ in Cajun French. ‘Nonc Rodell’ showcases Shawn as a world class groove drummer as well as the depth of his creative drumming abilities. Shawn pre recorded his tracks at his studio in NYC with his drums, squeezebox (accordion), as well as very interesting tenor guitar parts. We brought those tracks into Power Station New England studio and Shane and I added guitars and basses on top of Shawn’s pre recorded tracks. It’s a very creative track that features Shawn’s amazing drumming and I love it.

10. Sand Castles — An original of mine that’s very much inspired by Jimi Hendrix’s “Castles Made of Sand,” with Shane alluding to those chord voicings that I double on bass at times. The composition process started with the intro guitar/bass melody and a drum loop that I played along with. The chord sequence for the A section transitions to the bridge that features a fretless melody. The solo section features a guitar solo by Shane followed by a fretless bass solo then returning back to the melody and bridge for a vamp and ending.

11. Eastern Blue — This is a song that I started as an eastern flavored melody and a hymn like chant channeling my love of Eastern philosophy and Yoga. The bass melody outlines an E dominant 7th flat five scale, also called lydian dominant. The melody was extended, chords were added and an intro was created to form the final arrangement. The basic groove was recorded with guitar, fretted bass and drums and over that, features a spacious solo by Shane along with undercurrent guitar pads as well as a bass solo that leads back to the melody and end vamp. The feel and sound of the track was inspired by the atmospheric sound of the David Lanois- Brian Eno recording. (1983’s Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks). I wanted this to close the record as an Eastern chant. It’s definitely the one song on this album that is a bridge to the Indian flavored album I did with Shane and Arjun Bruggeman (Dreaming Spirits Wavetone Records).

Dreaming Spirits is a World Jazz group led by Grammy-award winning musicians, bassist Mark Egan and tabla player and percussionist Arjun Bruggeman featuring special guest guitarist, Shane Theriot.

This audiophile recording features fourteen original instrumental World Jazz compositions for a total of 74 minutes exploring multidirectional ambient grooves and masterful improvisations from some of the most influential contemporary improvising musicians.

Arjun and Mark were inspired to record this project since meeting in 2008 while playing together with the Kirtan chanting master, Krishna Das with whom they continue to perform and record. The addition of master guitarist Shane Theriot completed the chemistry for this inspired recording.

Truth Be Told is a musical concept that I have been dreaming about since my last trio record, As We Speak. This is all about the groove and interplay of a quartet

The idea for this recording project was to compose music for a larger super-group comprised of some of the best players in the world in a setting that would feature these incredible improvisers while at the same time allowing me to function as both a supportive rhythm section player and a soloist. I was fortunate to be able to assemble Bill Evans, Mitch Forman, Vinnie Colaiuta and Roger Squitero for this project. We are all great friends and have played together at various times over the past twenty-eight years however have never performed as a group until this recording.

Everything came together and everyone contributed 1,000 percent. Not only was it some of the most intense music that I have played but I have never had so much fun doing it. We recorded 11 songs in 3 days at Avatar Studios in New York, engineered by Phil Magnotti. I hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed recording the music.

I’ve always enjoyed the freedom and communication of playing in a trio environment. Ever since my early musical experiences in junior high school plain gin a trio with drums, accordion, and my first instrument, trumpet. I’ve always been intrigued by the amount of music that can be created by three people. In high school some of the trios that influenced me were Cream and The Jimi Hendrix Experience. I’ll never forget seeing Jimi Hendrix live in Rhode Island when the band was at their peak.

As a bassist studying music at the University of Miami in Florida I became exposed to the entire jazz movement with guidance from jazz mentors Jerry Coker, Whit Sidner and Ira Sullivan. I became infatuated with the music of Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker as well as trios led by Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, Oscar Peterson and many others. It is the depth of communication through the language of improvisation in Jazz that contuse to inside me to listen, play, compose and practice.

“As We Speak” is a trio project that has long been in the making. I wanted to capture both an intimate and progressive side of my playing and composing in a creative trio setting. Long time friend and master drummer Danny Gottlieb was the perfect choice since we’ve played together with our group Elements as well as numerous ensembles for over thirty-five years. I’ve always been a huge fan of guitarist John Abercrombie and am honored to have him join Danny and I on this recording. Danny and John are some of the greatest contemporary improvising musicians of our time and playing with them was inspiring experience.

All of the music was recorded in two days by two great friends at Electric Fields Studio, engineered by Jeff Ciampa and mixed by Richard Brownstein

Mark Egan and I have been playing together all of my musical life. We first me in 1971 at the University of Miami, and I was going to write that we have played on hundreds of projects together. But, at this point, the reality is that it is THOUSANDS of projects: Elements, Pat Metheny Group, Gil Evans, Sting, Bill Evans, Michael Franks, Manhattan Transfer, George Gruntz, Larry Coryell, Joe Beck, Jeff Ciampa, Lew Soloff, the list is endless. Mark is without a doubt one of the greatest, most musical bassists in the history of the instrument and I am so proud that he has asked me to participate in this historic recording!

John Abercrombie is one of my musical heroes, and from a drummer’s stand point, is one of the most amazing people in the world with whom to play. Like Mark, he’s an unbelievably sensitive musician, capable of allowing the music to flow in so many different directions. This music was original inspired by a duo session I had with Toninho Horta in New York City in the summer of 1990. I’ve always been a big fan of Toninho’s music, and Brazilian music in general. I started composing with this direction in mind, combining more ambient and rhythmic grooves as well as songs from Toninho, to create a backdrop for all the great musicians who joined me on this project. About Spirit River
Quiet clearly, Mark Egan’s years with Pat Metheny had a lasting impact on his composing and playing. When Spirit River was recorded in 1990, a decade had passed since the electric bassist’s departure from the Metheny Group; but Metheny’s influence remained. Nonetheless, the album makes it clear that Egan and drummer Danny Gottlieb (Elements’ other leader) have a collective vision of their own. This charming jazz/pop date isn’t about intense or aggressive swinging, and tends to have an introspective, floating quality. Saxman Bill Evans (not to be confused with the late piano legend) is characteristically expressive and soulful on soprano, and Brazilian greats Flora Purim (vocals) and Airto Moreira (percussion) make some valuable, heartfelt contributions to the engaging CD.

Illumination is the fourth recording by the influential fusion group Elements – Mark Egan and Danny Gottlieb, and features special guests: Bill Evans (sax), Clifford Carter (keyboards), Steve Khan (guitar) and Stan Samole (guitar).

Seven of the ten compositions were recorded during the summer of 1987 at Right Track Studios, NYC. Engineered by Scott, and produced by Mark Egan and Danny Gottlieb.

The additional three compositions were recorded at Howard Schwartz Recording, NYC in 1986, engineered by Richard Brownstein and also produced by Mark Egan and Danny Gottlieb.

Following their tenure as members of the Grammy Award winning Pat Metheny Group, Mark and Danny with a collective vision of their own wanted to form their group and teamed up with special guests Bill Evans (saxophone) and Clifford Carter (Keyboards) to record these seven original compositions.

During this time period Bill Evans was a member of the Miles Davis group and Clifford Carter was a first call New York session player as well as a member of the 24 Street Band.

The music was recorded in two days in the summer of 1982 at Howard Schwartz Recording Studios, NYC and engineered by Richard Brownstein and produced by Mark Egan and Danny Gottlieb.

This first Elements project captures a special and expansive group sound and chemistry that would be the launching point for the future Elements recordings.

Danny Gottlieb and I had wanted to record our own project for several years while we were with the Pat Metheny Group and we decided to go ahead and compose songs that would be a good feature for us as a rhythm section team as well as to feature our great friends and talented musicians, Bill Evans and Clifford Carter.

At the time we didn’t have a record deal but felt that we wanted to go into the studio and document the concepts that we had been envisioning.

I met recording engineer Richard Brownstein while at another recording session at Howard Schwartz Recording in NYC and he also was an alumni of the University of Miami where Danny, Clifford and I had attended music school. We made arrangements to record during a weekend with our new music and Elements, our first record, was created.

Unit 1
Unit 1 is an eclectic and electric jazz trio with bassist Mark Egan, drummer Karl Latham and guitarist John Hart. The group has drawn their multi-directional influences from jazz, rock, funk and world music to create fresh interpretations and improvisations of jazz Standards.

This music was recorded from three performances at the club Bula in Newton, NJ.
